Sophie Overett is an award-winning writer, editor, podcaster and cultural producer based in Melbourne, Victoria.

Her stories have been published in Griffith Review, Going Down Swinging, Overland Online, The Sleepers Almanac, and elsewhere. She won the 2020 Penguin Australia Literary Prize and the 2018 AAWP Emerging Writer Prize, and has been shortlisted for many others, including The Text Prize and The Richell Prize. She’s passionate about storytelling in all of its forms, but particularly stories for the page and the screen. She writes across genres and formats, with a focus on magical realism, literary fiction and horror. Her debut novel, The Rabbits, was published by Penguin Random House in Australia in 2021 and by Gallic Press in the UK and US in 2023. Her screenplay, All the Little Fishes, is in development with Cathartic Pictures.

Her passion for storytelling doesn’t stop at her own though. She is the proud co-director of Inside Voice Australia, a company devoted to spotlighting women in storytelling. Through Inside Voice, she co-hosts, edits and produces Lady Parts, a podcast about women’s roles in genre cinema, and runs The Oscars Project, a blog devoted to watching and cataloguing every film that’s ever been nominated for an Academy Award. Through Inside Voice, Sophie also teaches, runs events both online and in-person and assists on other projects with her co-director and partner-in-crime, Aimee Lindorff.
